  1. Rape and sexual violence have long served as a weapon of humiliation to construct the male identity.
  2. Propaganda released by terrorist organizations ‘sex slaves’ and new wives as a way to draw men into their ranks.
  3. Terrorists often use women to carry out logistical tasks because there is an assumption that women can pass checkpoints and avoid house inspections more easily.
  4. Terrorist groups use sexual and gender-based violence to increase their political influence and consolidate territorial gains.
  5. Terrorist organizations have the strategy of targeting women who are very young and unencumbered by families.

  1. If securitized and militarized practice of countering terrorism will continue to absorb societies, there will be no outlet for women’s grievances.
  2. Societies that respect women’s rights are less prone to extremism.
  3. Women as active participants in counterterrorism are less likely to compromise on gender equality when it comes to developing counterterrorism strategies.
  4. Without analyzing gender indicators and understanding gender strategies of terrorist groups, important security information about terrorists’ further plans and goals may get lost.
